Aubrey Player Killed in Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident
The 57-year-old man was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe in the Central-Alameda neighborhood
Aubrey Player, 57, was killed in a pedestrian crash at Duarte and 55th streets in the Central-Alameda neighborhood of South Los Angeles on Friday, according to the police department.
A northbound white Chevrolet Tahoe struck Player in the intersection at approximately 8:35 p.m. Video from the scene showed a body covered by a white tarp in the road as officers investigated the collision. Player was pronounced dead by responding Los Angeles Fire Department personnel.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the LAPD said.
Investigating pedestrian accidents
In pedestrian crashes such as this, safety analysts point to intersection dynamics as a critical component of crash reconstruction.

Detectives will review surveillance footage from the Central-Alameda neighborhood and analyze the Chevrolet Tahoe's event data recorder to help determine the vehicle's speed and braking patterns before the crash.
The California Office of Traffic Safety said pedestrian deaths dropped roughly 8.8 percent, from 1,213 in 2022 to 1,106 in 2023.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
"Roadway infrastructure, including missing sidewalk connections and inadequate pedestrian warning signage, sometimes contributes to severe pedestrian incidents. Traffic engineering standards dictate clear safety protocols for high-foot-traffic corridors," said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.
