Ben Irwin Injured in Verona Car Accident

The three-vehicle collision occurred on Rome New London Road and left a vehicle engulfed in flames
Ben Irwin, 27, of Cicero, was among four people injured in a three-car crash on Rome New London Road in Verona, New York, on April 15, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
A southbound 2015 Nissan Rogue collided head-on with a northbound 2025 Toyota Tacoma at approximately 4:30 a.m. A third vehicle, a northbound 2022 Nissan Frontier, then struck one of the vehicles in the road.
The Nissan Rogue caught fire following the initial impact. Bystanders pulled the driver and a 17-year-old passenger from the burning vehicle before it was fully engulfed in flames.
Paramedics transported three people to WYNN Hospital and one person to Rome Health for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The road reopened at 6:17 a.m. Deputies continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and no charges have been announced.
Why did the vehicles collide head-on on Rome New London Road?
While deputies work to determine which vehicle crossed the center line on Rome New London Road, investigators will examine tire marks, vehicle damage, and witness statements to piece together the sequence of events. Establishing exactly how the initial impact occurred is critical for determining liability.
National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "In head-on car accidents, accident reconstruction experts are often required to analyze the debris field and electronic data recorders to definitively establish which driver failed to maintain their lane."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, head-on collisions account for more than 10% of all fatal traffic crashes nationwide, despite representing a small fraction of total accidents. These impacts frequently result in severe injuries due to the combined speeds of the approaching vehicles.
What legal options do the injured passengers and drivers have?
Passengers, such as the 17-year-old involved in this crash, share no liability for the collision and are often caught in the middle of complex insurance claims while recovering from their injuries.
National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Passengers injured in multi-vehicle car accidents have the right to pursue personal injury claims against the at-fault driver's insurance, ensuring their medical expenses and recovery costs are fully covered."
When multiple vehicles are involved, insurance carriers often attempt to shift blame to minimize payouts. A thorough review of the official police report and physical evidence is necessary to protect the rights of those injured through no fault of their own.
New York personal injury claims
Under New York's comparative negligence laws, individuals injured in a motor vehicle crash can seek compensation from the at-fault party, even if multiple drivers share responsibility. Injured passengers and non-fault drivers may pursue claims for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering through the liable driver's bodily injury liability coverage. National Legal Analyst Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "In complex car accidents involving multiple vehicles, an independent legal investigation is crucial to identify all sources of liability and protect the victims from aggressive insurance adjusters."
Victims in New York generally have three years from the date of the collision to file a personal injury lawsuit. Prompt preservation of evidence, including police reports, electronic data recorders, and medical records, is essential for building a strong negligence claim and ensuring all legal rights are protected.
