Camila Leon car accident on Ramona Expressway, Perris, California

Two-vehicle collision at Ramona Expressway and East Rider Street leaves 5 others injured

Camila Leon, 8, of Perris, was killed in a two-vehicle collision at Ramona Expressway and East Rider Street in Perris, California, on Saturday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

The collision occurred around 5:40 p.m. and resulted in one of the vehicles catching fire. Cal Fire crews and deputies arrived to find the wreckage blocking the intersection. Paramedics transported six people to a local hospital, where Leon died from her injuries. Four other patients were listed in critical condition, and two were in stable condition.

No arrests have been made as investigators work to determine the cause of the wreck.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, the state recorded 4,061 traffic fatalities in 2023.

While the exact cause remains under investigation, weather-related factors often play a significant role in severe collisions, requiring a thorough examination by experienced professionals to protect the rights of the grieving family.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Intersections create some of the deadliest conditions on American roads, where drivers running red lights, misjudging gaps in traffic, or failing to yield create sudden and fatal outcomes for everyone nearby. Poor signal timing and limited sight lines make matters worse in communities nationwide."

"A legal team examining a fatal intersection crash pulls traffic signal data and nearby surveillance footage," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do weather conditions impact intersection crashes?

Investigators will look at how environmental conditions, such as weather-related visibility issues or slick roads, may have contributed to the crash dynamics at the Ramona Expressway intersection. When poor weather combines with driver negligence, the risk of catastrophic, fiery collisions increases significantly.

Individuals involved in car accident incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Crash reconstruction experts analyze skid marks, point of impact, and rest positions to re-create collision events," said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

Formica, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, noted, "An attorney assists grieving families by securing these technical findings early, managing complex communication with insurance representatives, and protecting surviving relatives from aggressive settlement pressure during an extraordinarily difficult time of loss."
