Duo Ying Liang Killed in Mission Viejo Pedestrian Accident
An 18-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI following the fatal Saturday night collision
Duo Ying Liang, 60, of Mission Viejo, was killed in a pedestrian crash near Pacific Crest and Glenwood drives in Mission Viejo, California, on Aug. 8, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Paramedics with the Orange County Fire Authority found the woman, later identified as Liang, on the ground with severe injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died the following day. Caleb Thomas Baeza, 18, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into the Orange County Jail. The collision occurred in a residential neighborhood at approximately 9:19 p.m.
The department's Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the case. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact investigators.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 1,106 pedestrians were killed on state roads in 2023.
When a family loses a loved one to an impaired driver, the criminal justice system handles the charges against the drivers, but it does not automatically compensate the victim's estate.
