Christian Castro Killed in Sampson County Rollover Accident
A blown tire caused the vehicle to lose control and flip into the westbound lanes of Interstate 40
Christian Castro, 17, of Spring Lake, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Sampson County on Friday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Investigators are examining a blown tire as the primary cause of the crash. The agency reported that the vehicle's back right tire separated, causing the driver to lose control near mile marker 358. The eastbound 2007 Toyota sedan veered off the left side of the highway and struck a cable guardrail. The impact caused the car to flip multiple times before crossing into the westbound lanes and coming to a rest.
Castro and another 17-year-old backseat passenger were thrown from the vehicle during the rollover. Paramedics transported Castro to ECU Medical Health Center, where he later died from his injuries.
The 19-year-old driver and two other passengers were taken to regional hospitals for treatment. Their current conditions were not immediately available.
The crash marks the fifth traffic death in Sampson County within a seven-day period, according to Highway Patrol records.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, tire-related crashes result in over 700 deaths annually nationwide.
