Christian Castro Killed in Sampson County Rollover Accident

A blown tire caused the vehicle to lose control and flip into the westbound lanes of Interstate 40
Christian Castro, 17, of Spring Lake, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Sampson County on Friday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Investigators are examining a blown tire as the primary cause of the crash. The agency reported that the vehicle's back right tire separated, causing the driver to lose control near mile marker 358. The eastbound 2007 Toyota sedan veered off the left side of the highway and struck a cable guardrail. The impact caused the car to flip multiple times before crossing into the westbound lanes and coming to a rest.
Castro and another 17-year-old backseat passenger were thrown from the vehicle during the rollover. Paramedics transported Castro to ECU Medical Health Center, where he later died from his injuries.
The 19-year-old driver and two other passengers were taken to regional hospitals for treatment. Their current conditions were not immediately available.
The crash marks the fifth traffic death in Sampson County within a seven-day period, according to Highway Patrol records.
Why did the Toyota lose control on Interstate 40?
While troopers continue to examine the wreckage, independent investigators often look closely at vehicle maintenance records and manufacturing defects when a tire fails at highway speeds.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Rollover crashes are among the deadliest because when a vehicle flips, the roof can cave in, glass can shatter, and repeated impacts leave people dangerously exposed. Tire blowouts, driver fatigue, or rough roads often make vehicles unstable, raising the risk of ejection and turning violent crashes into tragedies."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, tire-related crashes result in over 700 deaths annually nationwide.
What role does tire separation play in rollover crashes?
Families who lose a teenager in a sudden highway crash are often left searching for answers about how a routine drive turned fatal.
"When analyzing single-vehicle accidents, it is crucial to evaluate all potential liability sources, including the driver's actions and the equipment manufacturers, to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
A thorough examination of the vehicle's event data recorder and the failed tire itself can help determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the rollover.
North Carolina wrongful death claims
"In fatal car accidents, a thorough civil investigation often uncovers multiple layers of liability, from driver negligence to corporate responsibility for defective automotive parts," added Bond.
Surviving family members may be entitled to seek compensation for medical expenses incurred prior to death, funeral costs, and the loss of the deceased's income, services, and companionship. North Carolina enforces a strict two-year statute of limitations for wrongful death claims, making the immediate preservation of physical evidence—such as the failed tire and the vehicle's event data recorder—critical to building a viable case.
