Deondre Deloatch Killed in Northridge Hit-and-Run Accident

Deondre Deloatch, a 29-year-old man, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Northridge. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office identified him Friday. The crash occurred at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday in the area of Roscoe Boulevard and White Oak Avenue.
A gray 2006 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on Roscoe Boulevard, west of White Oak Avenue, when it struck Deloatch. The pedestrian was dragged a distance before being dislodged from the vehicle. The Honda continued eastbound on Roscoe without stopping.
Paramedics rushed Deloatch to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Authorities urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8255. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
In the wake of fatal hit-and-run incidents, such as the one that killed Deondre Deloatch, investigators meticulously examine crash scenes for evidence. This often includes vehicle debris, tire marks, and surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras. Identifying the make, model, and year of the involved vehicle is crucial, as is locating witnesses who may have observed the crash or the fleeing driver.
Hit-and-run crashes continue to be a significant concern. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were an estimated 2,521 fatal hit-and-run crashes in the U.S. in 2022, marking a 9% increase from 2021. California consistently ranks among the states with the highest numbers of hit-and-run fatalities.
National Legal Analyst Candice Bond emphasized the legal timelines involved in such cases. "Every state has a deadline for taking action after a tragedy, known as the statute of limitations," Bond said. National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica added, "When a driver flees the scene, it not only complicates the investigation but also compounds the emotional and financial distress for the victim's family. An experienced attorney can advocate for the family, helping to protect their rights and guiding them through the investigative and legal processes."
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
