Suspect with history of DWI charges held on $250,000 bail following deadly Interstate 87 collision
Derick Dewayne Wright of Raleigh was killed in a suspected DUI crash on Interstate 87 in Raleigh on Sunday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers arrested 33-year-old Wimandre Anton Hendricks on eight charges, including felony involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor death by vehicle. Investigators determined the suspect was driving at a speed greater than reasonable for the rainy conditions on the interstate.
A second person involved in the collision suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Their current condition remains unknown.
Hendricks refused a blood alcohol test following the wreck, court documents show. Records indicate he has a history of traffic offenses, including a 2019 DWI charge and multiple citations for driving with a revoked license.
A judge set bail at $250,000 during a Monday appearance in Wake County District Court, citing the suspect's history of violating court-imposed restrictions.
The suspect also faces charges for reckless driving, driving without a license, and operating a vehicle with unsafe tires.
