Dion Mumphrey Killed in Santa Clarita Hit-and-Run Accident

The suspect was driving a large, dark-colored pickup truck that fled westbound on Magic Mountain Parkway.
Dion Mumphrey, 39, was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash at the intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway and Tourney Road in Santa Clarita on Friday, April 10, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
A large, dark-colored pickup truck struck him, and the driver failed to remain at the scene. The motorist continued westbound on Magic Mountain Parkway, authorities said.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel responded to the location and pronounced Mumphrey dead.
The medical examiner's office formally identified him on Tuesday. A description of the suspect was not available.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities are actively searching for the fleeing driver.
Why did the pickup truck flee the scene on Magic Mountain Parkway?
While deputies search for the dark-colored pickup truck, investigators will likely review surveillance footage from nearby businesses along the parkway to identify the fleeing driver. National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Hit-and-run pedestrian accidents often leave families searching for answers while law enforcement works to track down the responsible party through vehicle debris, traffic cameras, and witness statements."
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roads, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths annually. Pedestrians account for the majority of these deaths, as they are the most vulnerable road users.
What legal options exist for hit-and-run pedestrian accident victims?
Families of victims killed by fleeing drivers often face immediate financial burdens, including funeral costs and loss of income, before the suspect is even apprehended. National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, noted that "In fatal hit-and-run pedestrian accidents, the victim's family may be able to seek compensation through their own uninsured motorist coverage if the at-fault driver is never identified, making it crucial to explore all available insurance avenues."

California wrongful death statute
Under California's wrongful death statute (Code of Civil Procedure § 377.60), surviving family members or the personal representative of the estate may pursue a civil action when a person's death is caused by the wrongful act or negligence of another. This legal framework allows families to seek accountability even if the at-fault driver faces separate criminal charges for fleeing the scene. Candice Bond of Bond Legal noted that "Wrongful death claims in fatal pedestrian accidents are designed to help surviving family members recover financial stability after an unexpected loss, addressing both immediate expenses and long-term financial impacts."
Families typically have two years from the date of the victim's death to file a wrongful death lawsuit in California. Recoverable damages under the statute may include funeral and burial expenses, the loss of the deceased person's expected financial support, and compensation for the loss of companionship and guidance.
