Ernesto Salatiel Avina Rodriguez Arrested in Coalinga DUI...

Suspect tracked down after leaving license plate in wreckage of two-vehicle collision
A driver was injured when a suspected drunk driver crashed into their car and fled the scene at Elm Avenue and Seventh Street in Coalinga on Friday, April 10, according to the Coalinga Police Department.
Ernesto Salatiel Avina Rodriguez faces charges of felony driving under the influence with injuries and felony hit-and-run. Officers tracked the suspect to the 100 block of Monroe Street after finding a license plate belonging to a white Chevrolet pickup truck in the crash debris.
The pickup collided with a red Honda Accord, pinning the Honda's driver inside the wreckage. Coalinga Fire crews extricated the victim and provided medical treatment before transporting them to a local hospital.
Investigators located the Chevrolet intentionally concealed away from the road. Rodriguez admitted to driving the vehicle and leaving the scene while attempting to minimize his role in the collision, police said.
A breath sample indicated the suspect had a blood alcohol content .10% over the legal limit. He was then taken into custody. The crash remains under investigation.

For victims recovering from severe injuries after a hit-and-run, the physical and emotional toll can be overwhelming. While criminal charges address the suspect's actions, independent investigations often reveal the full scope of negligence. National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Nobody thinks about the physics of a DUI crash until they're facing months of grueling physical therapy. Reconstructionists can prove impairment through lane drift patterns even if a driver won't take a breath test at the scene."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol impairment is a factor in nearly one-third of all traffic death nationwide, and thousands more suffer life-altering injuries each year.
How does a felony DUI charge impact the Coalinga crash investigation?
When a suspect faces felony charges for fleeing a crash scene, the criminal proceedings run parallel to any civil claims. Police evidence, including the recovered license plate and breath sample results, becomes critical documentation for establishing liability. Investigators will document the exact point of impact at Elm Avenue and Seventh Street to understand the crash dynamics.
What are the legal options for the injured Honda driver?
Insurance adjusters frequently attempt to settle claims quickly, often before the full extent of a victim's medical costs and long-term rehabilitation needs are fully understood. National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, observed that "Trying to put your life back together after being hit by a drunk driver is an incredibly heavy burden. Crash reconstructionists don't just rely on blood tests; they look at lane drift patterns to prove a driver was impaired."
