Driver fatal commercial truck accident on 40 Freeway, Newberry Springs, California

The fiery multi-vehicle collision shut down westbound lanes of the 40 Freeway for nearly two days

California's highways see hundreds of fatal commercial vehicle collisions annually, a toll that grew Friday when a multi-vehicle wreck claimed a life in San Bernardino County. A driver was killed in a fiery crash involving three semi-trucks and two passenger vehicles on the westbound 40 Freeway in Newberry Springs on April 17, according to the California Highway Patrol.‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌

Two of the tractor-trailers burst into flames upon impact, leaving the road severely damaged.

First responders found one person badly injured in the wreckage, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Bernardino County Coroner's Office has not yet released the victim's identity.

The collision, which occurred just before 7 p.m. near the Desert Oasis Rest Area west of Harvard Road, adds to the 321 truck accident death recorded across California in recent state data.

Authorities closed all westbound lanes at Hector Road for nearly two days to help cleanup and road repairs.

Traffic was diverted to National Trails Highway via a single lane in both directions, causing significant backups throughout the weekend. The CHP declared the westbound lanes clear around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Barstow Area Office is investigating the crash.
