How the I-280 Crash Unfolded Near Foothill Expressway

The crash happened at about 5 p.m. near the Foothill Expressway exit. A northbound Lexus hit the concrete center median and rolled over into the southbound lanes, where it struck a southbound Kia SUV. The Lexus driver was thrown onto the freeway. One of the Lexus tires came loose and hit a Toyota sedan, and the driver of the sedan was killed. Debris from the Lexus also damaged a Tesla SUV and a Toyota SUV that were ahead of the Kia.

Road Closure and Next Steps After the Crash

The crash shut the southbound lanes of I-280 for more than four hours, and drivers were sent around it on Magdalena Avenue. An online fundraiser said De Sousa Bittancourt had been living in the United States with his brother. His family is raising money to send his ashes and belongings back to his mother in Brazil.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
