Earnest Matthews killed in Zachary crash, police say

Early morning collision between passenger van and log truck closes intersection for hours
Earnest Matthews, 50, was killed when his passenger van collided with a log truck at the corner of Mt. Pleasant and Barnett Cutoff roads in Zachary, Louisiana, on Tuesday, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office.
The vehicles struck each other around 5:45 a.m., Zachary Police reported.
The collision caused the road to be closed for several hours.
Crews moved the truck and the van to the shoulder of the road around 10:45 a.m.
Environmental factors and the Mt. Pleasant Road crash
Investigators are looking into the collision. Commercial vehicle crashes often involve complex liability when environmental factors reduce stopping distances and alter vehicle dynamics.
"Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth," said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their clients to ensure they are treated respectfully and compensated fairly."
In 2025, Louisiana recorded 58,997 suspected injury crashes, according to LSU CARTS data. Families dealing with the aftermath of a commercial truck accident face significant challenges when negotiating with corporate insurers and navigating state liability laws.
"An attorney can collect the proper evidence to help prove negligence in commercial truck accidents, which requires a variety of resources," said Stefano Formica, of Bond Legal
What happens next in the Zachary Police investigation?
Authorities will review electronic logging devices, driver hours-of-service records, and local weather reports to determine fault. The preservation of this commercial data is a critical step in understanding why the vehicles collided.
Louisiana personal injury framework
Louisiana follows a pure comparative fault system. The statute of limitations is 1 year — one of the shortest in the nation.
Damages include economic and non-economic losses. The short prescriptive period makes timely legal consultation particularly pressing.
