Eight people were hospitalized, including one with serious injuries, after approximately 70 vehicles crashed on the eastbound side of Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County on Tuesday.

Multiple semitrucks and other vehicles collided along a snowy stretch of the highway about 50 miles west of Denver, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The pileup left debris lining the roadway, with the fronts of several vehicles smashed and at least one partially off the ground. Responders evaluated 19 people at the scene.

Authorities closed the eastbound lanes following the multi-vehicle crash. It was not immediately clear what caused the pileup.
