Erick Delcampo Killed in Mesquite Car Accident

44-year-old man dies following early morning two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 80
Erick Delcampo, 44, of Mesquite, was killed in a two-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of the 3300 block of U.S. Highway 80 early Saturday, according to the Mesquite Police Department.
The department's Traffic Unit is actively investigating the crash. No charges have been filed.
Both drivers were rushed to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas following the 2:29 a.m. wreck. Delcampo was pronounced dead at the hospital. The condition of the second driver was not immediately released.
The crash occurred during a period of active river flood warnings and precipitation in the region.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, about one‑third of crashes in 2023 resulted in injury or death, with speed and impairment far outweighing severe weather as contributing factors.
Lanes were closed while investigators processed the scene. Traffic was diverted for several hours.
Texas roads saw 4,291 motor vehicle deaths in 2023, a grim backdrop for the latest fatal collision in Dallas County.
How do weather conditions impact highway safety?
When heavy rain and flooding affect visibility and traction, the risk of severe collisions increases significantly. In car accidents such as this, crash reconstruction investigators often examine tire tread depth, hydroplaning evidence, and driver reaction times.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Crash reconstruction is rarely a simple process, particularly when wet roads, reduced visibility, and compromised tire condition all converge at the moment two vehicles collide, because each factor compounds the others in ways that take trained specialists considerable time to untangle."
An attorney supporting a surviving family may work to ensure reconstruction findings are independently reviewed when official conclusions leave open questions, Bond added.
What are the investigation patterns for nighttime collisions?
Nighttime crashes on major highways require careful evidence gathering. Investigators will look at event data recorders and environmental factors to determine why the vehicles collided.
"Physical evidence from fatal highway crashes can disappear faster than expected. Legal counsel often acts quickly to secure vehicle data and reconstruction materials before the official investigation closes off access," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Texas wrongful death statute
Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.
