A 17-year-old driver was arrested following the fatal weekend collision on San Marin Drive
Nicolas Vargas, 17, died Saturday after a suspected DUI crash on San Marin Drive near Simmons Lane in Novato, police said. Four other teenagers were injured in the wreck.
The driver, 17, was taken into custody at a hospital on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to police. Authorities did not release the driver's name because of their age.
The car, carrying five teenagers between 16 and 18, veered off the road and hit a utility pole around 1 a.m.
All five people in the car were taken to a hospital with major injuries. Vargas was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Four of the teenagers attend Rancho Cotate and El Camino high schools, the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District said. The fifth teenager is a former student.
The crash remains under investigation.
