The Early Morning Crash on Northbound I-15

The crash happened at about 3:30 a.m. just north of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. The California Highway Patrol said the man had been called to the scene by his daughter after her vehicle developed a mechanical problem, possibly a flat tire. He stopped his minivan near her vehicle, alongside the center median. CHP Sgt. Ray Scheindes said the minivan appears to have been broadsided on the driver's side by a Toyota Corolla. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision set off a chain reaction, and two other vehicles later became involved. The California Highway Patrol said everyone else involved was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Four people under 18 were in the daughter's vehicle.

What the CHP Investigation Involves

The crash remains under investigation. A toxicology report has been issued through the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office. Traffic was diverted to State Route 52 while crews cleared the scene, and all northbound lanes reopened at about 8:45 a.m. The California Highway Patrol asked anyone who saw the crash to contact its San Diego Area office.

Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
