The crash remains under investigation by deputies. No charges have been filed.

The commercial vehicle veered off the road just after 11:10 a.m. It struck several trees, an outbuilding, a boat and another vehicle before stopping.

Paramedics took four passengers and the driver to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. It was not immediately clear if the injured passengers were students or adult chaperones.

The bus was carrying 17 students and six adults. Uninjured passengers were taken to the sheriff's office, where the American Red Cross provided assistance while they waited for alternate transportation.

Why did the tour bus veer off Diamond Point Road?

Investigators are working to determine what caused the driver to lose control of the commercial vehicle. They will examine the driver's hours of service, the mechanical condition of the bus and the road conditions at the time of the crash.

In commercial bus accidents such as this, safety analysts emphasize the rigorous regulations governing passenger transport. National LNational Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Being injured on public transit is a concerning experience. Buses are expected to meet strict safety criteria. This includes regular vehicle checks. Passengers deserve a secure and reliable ride every time."

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, buses remain significantly safer than personal vehicles on a per-mile basis. However, the agency reports that approximately 15,000 people are injured in bus accidents annually in the United States.

What are the safety standards for commercial tour buses?

The families of the injured students face unexpected medical evaluations and recovery periods. Commercial carriers carry higher insurance minimums due to the number of passengers they transport.

When evaluating liability in commercial transit crashes, legal practitioners look closely at the carrier's duty of care. National LNational Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "The fear after a transit crash is different because buses are held to the highest safety standard. They're called common carriers, which means the law expects them to be safer than any other vehicle on the road."

Deputies have not released the name of the tour bus company involved in the Sunday morning crash.

New York personal injury framework

New York follows a pure comparative fault system with no-fault auto insurance. The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Under New York's no-fault system, PIP benefits cover medical expenses and lost wages up to $50,000 regardless of fault. To pursue a liability claim, injuries must meet the 'serious injury' threshold under Insurance Law § 5102(d).
