Florentino Ramirez Killed in LeFlore County Car Accident

The two-vehicle collision occurred when an eastbound driver missed a stop sign at Morgan Hill Road
Florentino Ramirez, 22, of Poteau, was killed in a two-vehicle car accident at 360th Street and Morgan Hill Road in LeFlore County on May 9, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The eastbound vehicle approached the rural crossroads and failed to stop at a posted sign, striking a second car in the intersection. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage in the impact. Ramirez, a passenger in the eastbound vehicle, died from his injuries.
The driver of the eastbound car, a 21-year-old man, also died in the wreck. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Investigators confirmed all passengers were wearing seatbelts.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, the state recorded 718 traffic death in 2023. Failure to yield right-of-way continues to be a leading cause of multi-vehicle collisions. The crash remains under investigation by state troopers.
How do intersection crashes impact LeFlore County?
Rural intersections without traffic signals frequently see severe right-angle collisions, especially when drivers fail to observe posted stop signs. Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Many fatal intersection collisions begin with simple driver mistakes involving distraction, speeding, or failure to stop completely before entering cross traffic. An attorney may help preserve traffic camera footage, witness statements, vehicle data, and roadway evidence following fatal passenger collisions."
What happens next in the crash investigation?
"Grieving families of victims are sometimes overwhelmed by the legal processes that are in place to protect their rights," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Troopers will map the collision scene and review vehicle data recorders to determine the exact speed of the eastbound car before it entered the intersection at Morgan Hill Road. While the at-fault driver did not survive, establishing the sequence of events remains critical for the surviving victims and grieving families. Investigators will also examine whether environmental factors, such as sun glare or overgrown vegetation, obscured the stop sign prior to the impact.
Oklahoma wrongful death statute
Under Okla. Stat. tit. 12 § 1053, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Oklahoma applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and grief damages.
