Lawrence "Larry" L. Exe, 87, of Frenchtown, was killed in a side-by-side crash in a remote area north of Frenchtown on Oct. 24.
How the Side-by-Side Crash Unfolded
Missoula County deputies and Search and Rescue were called out at about 7:15 a.m. to help the Frenchtown Rural Fire District with a reported crash involving two men. The two had been riding on an old road that is no longer in use, in the Mill Creek and Roman Creek area, before sunrise. Exe was driving when the side-by-side's passenger-side tires dropped over an embankment. The passenger got out to help guide it back onto the road, and the vehicle then rolled several yards down the slope.
A Life Flight crew spotted the crash site and the passenger, but rough terrain and trees kept the helicopter from landing. Fire crews, with help from deputies and Search and Rescue, reached Exe at about 9 a.m. He died of his injuries. Fire district staff checked the passenger, who then left on his own.
