Imani Janel Vaughan Killed in Graham DUI Accident

TaiSean Malachi Jones charged with second-degree murder in deadly crash
Imani Janel Vaughan, 29, of Graham, died when the Jeep driven by TaiSean Malachi Jones, 24, of Raleigh, crashed. Jones was charged with second-degree murder on Saturday, according to the Graham Police Department. He was also seriously injured and hospitalized in the crash.
Police said Jones was impaired by alcohol and drugs when he allegedly ran a red light. He hit a Ford Mustang at the intersection of S. Main Street and Moore Street, causing the Jeep he was driving to overturn. Authorities are working to determine all factors involved.
Jones is due in court on Monday.
What are the challenges in investigating a DUI crash with an overturned vehicle?
"I've seen investigators piece together a fatal crash from a paint chip no bigger than a dime. Most drivers who flee don't realize that modern forensic analysis can identify their car's exact year and model," said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.
What do investigators look for at the corner of S. Main Street and Moore Street?
Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, explained, "Nobody thinks about "stale green" lights until they're waking up in a hospital bed. When a light has been green for a while, drivers shouldn't accelerate because cross-traffic is often rushing the yellow."
What are the victim's family's rights in a DUI accident?
North Carolina wrongful death statute
Under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 28A-18-2, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. North Carolina applies contributory negligence. The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of services and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
