Tennessee recorded 1,198 traffic death last year, and a recent head-on collision has added to that toll. Jack Ramsey, 19, was killed in a car accident on Briceville Highway in Briceville, Tennessee, on July 1, according to the Highway Patrol.‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍

The crash remains under active investigation by state troopers. No charges have been filed, as all individuals involved died at the scene.

The northbound BMW crossed the center line around 1:08 p.m. and struck an oncoming SUV head-on. The impact flipped the BMW onto its roof. It then burst into flames. The SUV stopped on the west side of the road.

Ramsey was a passenger in the BMW. The driver of the BMW and the driver of the SUV were also killed. Paramedics pronounced all three dead upon arrival.

Troopers closed a section of the highway near the 1077 block for several hours to clear the wreckage. Toxicology results are pending.

Why did the vehicle cross the center line on Briceville Highway?

Investigators are working to determine what caused the driver to veer into oncoming traffic. In car accidents such as this, authorities routinely examine toxicology reports to identify if impaired driving played a role. Tennessee data shows that alcohol and drug impairment remain leading factors in fatal roadway departures.

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. "If a bar continues to serve alcohol to someone who is clearly intoxicated and that decision leads to a serious crash, the law can hold that business accountable for contributing to the danger."

How common are fatal head-on collisions in Anderson County?

Head-on crashes represent a disproportionate number of traffic deaths statewide. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the state recorded 1,198 traffic death in 2024. Rural two-lane roads like Briceville Highway often lack physical barriers to prevent crossover collisions.

National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. "Nobody thinks about speed differential until they're looking at a crash scene. The difference in speed between two cars is actually the biggest predictor of whether everyone's going to make it home alive."

Families who lose a loved one in a crossover crash often face a complex path forward. Independent crash reconstructionists frequently analyze skid marks, vehicle data recorders, and witness statements to build a complete picture of the final seconds before impact.
