Jakob Esperum Killed in Portland Car Accident

The vehicle plunged into the Willamette River after the driver fled from officers through Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
Jakob Esperum, 20, and Trent Badillo, 17, both of Beavercreek, were killed when the car they were riding in plunged into the Willamette River in downtown Portland on April 6, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Police are working to recover the submerged Toyota Corolla from the river bottom. Investigators said the 19-year-old driver had been speeding the wrong way on one-way streets and running red lights.
When officers attempted a traffic stop, the sedan sped down Southwest Harvey Milk Street, crossed Southwest Naito Parkway, and crashed through a barrier at Tom McCall Waterfront Park before entering the water around 2 a.m.
A 17-year-old passenger survived the crash by swimming to the surface. Divers from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office recovered Esperum's body on Sunday, days after the remains of Badillo and the driver were recovered.
The crash remains under investigation.
Why did the vehicle crash into the Willamette River?
Passengers in vehicles driven by individuals attempting to evade law enforcement face extreme dangers, as they have no control over the vehicle's speed or trajectory. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, hundreds of deaths occur annually in crashes involving fleeing drivers, with passengers frequently bearing the brunt of the impact.
What are the risks for passengers in fleeing vehicles?
Under state law, individuals injured due to another party's negligence may be entitled to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The families of deceased passengers have similar rights to pursue accountability through the civil justice system.
Oregon wrongful death claims
Oregon law generally requires wrongful death claims to be filed within three years of the injury that caused the death. For surviving passengers who were hurt, personal injury claims can address medical expenses and trauma. Navigating the probate process and insurance negotiations simultaneously requires careful documentation of the crash timeline and liability factors.
