Jakub Solovsky Killed in Woodside Bicycle Accident
The 34-year-old cyclist was struck by a speeding vehicle that failed to negotiate a curve on State Route 35
Jakub Solovsky, 34, of East Palo Alto, was killed in a bicycle crash on Skyline Boulevard in Woodside on July 11, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash remains under active investigation by the CHP. The northbound Porsche, driven by a sole passengers, failed to negotiate a curve at a high rate of speed and crossed into the southbound lane. It struck the cyclist, Solovsky, head-on. The driver was uninjured.
Emergency crews responded to the scene just before 11:30 a.m. Solovsky was pronounced dead at the crash site.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. No charges have been announced.
Statewide data shows unsafe speed is the leading primary crash factor in fatal and serious injury bicycle collisions, accounting for 16.5% of incidents.
Why did the vehicle cross the center line on Skyline Boulevard?
Investigators are examining the physical evidence left on State Route 35 to determine the exact speed of the Porsche before it lost control. In bicycle accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists analyze tire marks, vehicle damage, and roadway geometry to understand how a driver failed to negotiate a curve.
The California Highway Patrol will use this data to establish a timeline of the moments leading up to the fatal impact.

California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
