A southbound 2017 Nissan Rogue collided with the northbound 2015 Kia Soul driven by Helmers at approximately 6 p.m. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 57-year-old driver of the Nissan was taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Troopers have not released further details regarding the exact cause of the collision.

How do weather conditions impact Highway 43 crash rates?

Rural corridors in Mississippi frequently see an increase in severe collisions during adverse weather. When rain reduces traction on two-lane roads, the margin for driver error narrows significantly, leaving oncoming drivers with little time to react to a vehicle crossing the center line.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Weather reports and road condition records can become critical evidence after a fatal crash, particularly when rain, fog, or wind played a role in how things developed. That information becomes harder to verify as time passes."

A legal team that acts promptly can secure those records, connect them to the physical evidence, and help surviving family members build an honest account of what the conditions actually were, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What happens next for the grieving family?

"Losing someone in a roadway crash leaves families in a state of profound grief, and the legal process that follows can feel completely foreign to people who have never had to navigate anything like it before," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

The sudden loss of a loved one leaves families facing immediate emotional and logistical hurdles. While investigators work to determine exactly why the southbound vehicle struck the northbound Kia, independent crash reconstructionists often examine tire tread depth, roadway drainage, and event data recorders to build a complete picture of the collision.

Mississippi wrongful death statute

Under Miss. Code § 11-7-13, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Mississippi applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
