Jordan Ballard Killed in Abilene Motorcycle Crash, Texas

The 19-year-old Dyess Air Force Base airman died following a collision with a left-turning vehicle
Jordan Ballard, 19, was killed in a motorcycle crash at Dub Wright Boulevard and Texas Avenue on June 30, according to the Abilene Police Department.
A southbound Jeep Wrangler attempting a left turn failed to yield the right of way and struck her northbound Kawasaki Ninja, investigators said. Bystanders began lifesaving measures before paramedics and firefighters arrived. Ballard, who was assigned to Dyess Air Force Base and wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by a justice of the peace.
Authorities do not suspect intoxication played a role in this specific collision.
The Police Department's Traffic Division is handling the ongoing investigation.
Why do left turns pose a severe risk to motorcyclists at intersections?
When analyzing motorcycle collisions, crash reconstructionists frequently examine intersection geometry and right-of-way violations.
Left-turning vehicles often fail to accurately judge the speed or distance of approaching motorcycles, creating a hazardous environment for riders who lack structural protection.
"Left turns in front of oncoming traffic create some of the most dangerous moments on the road, especially when timing leaves almost no margin for error. Side impacts cause catastrophic injuries because occupants have little protection during impact," said Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal.
"An attorney handling a fatal crash moves to secure camera footage and vehicle data before details disappear," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
How do Texas motorcycle death trends compare nationally?
"Insurance companies offer quick settlements before the extent of financial damages becomes clear to grieving families. A legal team reviews these early offers, comparing amounts against long-term needs, and advises against accepting anything that undervalues what relatives are owed," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Families of victims like Ballard are often left dealing with the sudden aftermath of these intersection crashes while police finalize their reports.
Texas wrongful death statute
Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.
