Karri Whitman Killed in Anderson Car Accident

The crash occurred on East West Parkway near Concord Road
Karri Whitman, 57-year-old Townville resident, was fatally injured in a car crash on East West Parkway near Concord Road in Anderson on Aug. 11, according to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office.
Responders arrived at the scene shortly after 10 a.m. to find multiple people injured. Paramedics treated the victims and transported them to local hospitals for further care. The northbound or southbound direction of the vehicles was not specified, but investigators said a car attempting to turn onto Concord Road turned directly in front of Whitman's vehicle.
Whitman succumbed to her injuries on Monday, nearly a week after the wreck.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
The crash reflects a broader state pattern, as the South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported 976 fatal crashes statewide in 2023.
Why did the vehicle turn in front of Whitman on East West Parkway?
Investigators will examine right-of-way rules, signal timing, and driver distraction to determine why the turning vehicle failed to yield at the Concord Road intersection. In intersection collisions such as this, crash reconstructionists often look at sightlines and vehicle speeds.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Failure to yield crashes often happen in an instant, when a driver misjudges the distance or speed of an oncoming vehicle while attempting a turn. The impact causes catastrophic injuries because the turning vehicle absorbs the brunt of a sudden collision on the driver side."
"An attorney moves fast to secure traffic camera footage, event data, and witness statements before evidence becomes hard to obtain," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
How common are fatal intersection crashes in Anderson County?
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety’s 2023 Fact Book, failure to yield was a leading cause of multi-vehicle crashes statewide.
The Highway Patrol's ongoing investigation will determine if charges are warranted against the driver who turned into Whitman's path.
South Carolina wrongful death statute
Under S.C. Code § 15-51-10, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. South Carolina applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and mental shock and suffering.
"Fatigue and rushed decision making often push a driver to gamble on a turn or crossing that really should have simply waited another moment for safety. That miscalculation, repeated across countless daily commutes, explains why failure to yield remains a persistent problem on American roadways," said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.
Formica, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, noted, "An attorney gathers cellphone records, dash camera footage, and witness statements that clarify what led to a serious roadway collision."
