Lee Amos Smith fatals pursuit crash on Hobson Avenue and Fifth Street, Hot Springs, Arkansas

Fatal collision in Garland County after police pursuit of stolen vehicle

Lee Amos Smith, 50, was arrested after a stolen car he was driving crashed into another vehicle during a police pursuit, killing two people and injuring two others, police said. The crash happened Thursday, March 12, near Hobson Avenue and Fifth Street in Hot Springs.

A Hot Springs police officer tried to stop a stolen car near Cleveland and White streets at about 6:06 p.m., police said. Smith, the driver, did not stop and led officers on a chase.

Three minutes later, at 6:09 p.m., the fleeing car hit an eastbound vehicle at Hobson Avenue and Fifth Street. Smith, the driver, then ran from the stolen car, police said. Officers arrested him several blocks away.

The crash killed two people and injured a third, authorities said. The victims have not yet been identified.

The Arkansas State Police Troop K is investigating the crash.

The Hot Springs Police Department formally turned over the investigation into the fatal collision to the Arkansas State Police Troop K for a comprehensive reconstruction. Smith faces a litany of charges including two counts of manslaughter, two counts of third-degree battery, fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury, theft by receiving, and three counts of second-degree criminal mischief. He remains in custody following his apprehension at Fourth Street and South Avenue. Authorities have not yet released the names of the two deceased victims pending further notification of next of kin. Admissions or findings of fault will be determined as the state police investigation concludes.

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "I've seen families blindsided by how quickly a simple commute turns into a heartbeat of loss. It's devastating that left-turn crashes account for over twenty percent of all fatal intersection accidents."

In Arkansas, family members of those killed in collisions caused by fleeing suspects or negligent drivers may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such legal actions are designed to hold responsible parties accountable for financial and emotional burdens on survivors, including funeral expenses, loss of consortium, and lost future earnings. Injured parties in this Hot Springs collision also possess the right to seek compensation for medical bills and pain and suffering through personal injury litigation. To navigate the complexities of multi-agency investigations and insurance negotiations, consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims after a fatal collision.
