The collision occurred on Lee Castleberry Road at Foxgrove Drive

Leonard Cantrell, 30, of Dawsonville, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Lee Castleberry Road near Foxgrove Drive in Dawson County on Saturday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌

First responders pronounced the rider dead at the scene after a westbound Kawasaki EX500 struck the passenger side of a white Honda Civic driven by Cantrell. Investigators determined the Honda was turning left from the eastbound lanes into a residential drive when the collision occurred.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges or citations against the driver of the Honda.

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, the state recorded 192 motorcycle fatalities in 2020, up from 170 in 2019, marking the highest toll in more than a decade.

Why did the Honda turn into oncoming traffic on Lee Castleberry Road?

While the cause and liability of a crash are being investigated, it is important that a competent attorney handles investigations into cases such as this to ensure the rights of the victim's family are protected.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Motorcycles rank among the most vulnerable vehicles on any road, and left-turn collisions expose that vulnerability in devastating ways. When a turning driver fails to detect an oncoming rider, the results are often catastrophic."

"Experienced legal counsel moves quickly to secure surveillance footage, document vehicle positions, and build a complete picture from available evidence," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Left-turn collisions frequently highlight the imbalance between larger vehicles and more vulnerable road users. In 2019, Georgia had 3,948 motorcycle crashes statewide, with motorcyclists representing 11% of total traffic death.

What legal options exist for families after a fatal Dawson County crash?

The sudden loss of a loved one leaves families searching for answers, especially when navigating the complexities of civil and potential criminal liability.

Georgia wrongful death statute

Under O.C.G.A. § 51-4-1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Georgia applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages focus on the full value of the life of the decedent, including both economic and intangible losses.

According to Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal, "Filing a wrongful death claim gives surviving relatives a formal path forward after a fatal crash. An attorney helps families navigate that process without adding to an already unbearable burden."
