The chain of events began around 1:19 a.m. A box truck rear-ended a pickup truck near Shallowford Road. Minutes later, an SUV collided with a tanker truck near the initial wreckage. The second impact sparked a large fire.

One person died at the scene. Paramedics took several other victims to local hospitals. Their conditions remain unknown.

Crews closed all northbound lanes near Chamblee Tucker Road for several hours to extinguish the flames and clear debris.

How common are truck crashes on I-85?

Interstate 85 serves as a major freight corridor through metro Atlanta, seeing heavy traffic at all hours. When multi-vehicle collisions involve large trucks, the risk of catastrophic injury increases exponentially due to vehicle weight disparities and hazardous cargo.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Distracted driving, excessive speed, and aggressive lane changes regularly transform ordinary traffic conditions into catastrophic chain-reaction collisions with widespread property damage and debilitating injuries. An attorney can preserve dash-camera footage, interview witnesses, analyze debris patterns, and address motorist complications."

What caused the secondary tanker collision near Shallowford Road?

According to Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal, "In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney will carefully examine what may have contributed to the crash and has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate witnesses to the crash, and review applicable insurance coverage."

Investigators are working to determine if poor visibility, speed, or a lack of warning flares contributed to the SUV striking the tanker truck. Secondary crashes often occur when approaching drivers fail to recognize stopped traffic in time. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, driver-related factors play a role in over a third of fatal large truck crashes nationwide.
