A westbound white sedan struck the woman at approximately 10:30 p.m. just east of Lankershim Boulevard. The driver fled the scene without stopping to render aid or identify themselves to authorities.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics treated Huerta at the collision site. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed she died from blunt traumatic injuries. Investigators have not determined if she was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash.

Detectives from the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division are searching for the white sedan and its driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.

How common are fatal hit-and-run pedestrian accidents in California?

California consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for hit‑and‑run fatalities, with state data showing nearly 500 such deaths in 2022. Nationwide, pedestrians and cyclists are especially vulnerable, accounting for about one in four hit‑and‑run deaths, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

When drivers flee the scene, it complicates the immediate medical response and the subsequent investigation. In hit-and-run pedestrian accidents such as this, investigators rely heavily on physical evidence left at the scene and surveillance footage from nearby businesses.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras can disappear within days, and that window closes faster than most people realize. Capturing that footage before records cycle out often determines whether a fleeing driver is identified."

"Experienced legal counsel acts immediately to preserve those recordings, review available imagery, and build a clear picture of events before the trail goes cold," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What makes Victory Boulevard a comparative risk for pedestrians?

Major arterial roads in Los Angeles County often feature multiple lanes of high-speed traffic, increasing the comparative risk for pedestrians crossing outside of signalized intersections. Investigators will review lighting conditions and crosswalk availability along the stretch of Victory Boulevard near Troost Avenue to understand the environmental factors present during the nighttime collision.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting are all contributing factors that demand careful examination. That kind of thoroughness is essential for families who have lost a loved one and are counting on a complete picture of what happened," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
