Mason Mereroa e-bike accident on Patchogue-Holbrook Road, Lake Ronkonkoma, New York

The 10-year-old boy was struck by a turning vehicle on Patchogue-Holbrook Road

Mason Mereroa, 10, of Holbrook, was seriously injured in an e-bike crash on Patchogue-Holbrook Road near Richard Place in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York, on May 22, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍

A southbound 2020 Porsche Macan was making a right turn when it struck the northbound e-bike, which was traveling in the southbound shoulder of the service lane. The impact threw Mereroa from the bike.

Paramedics transported the boy to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Porsche, a 27-year-old Ronkonkoma man, was not hurt.

Fourth Squad detectives impounded both vehicles for safety checks. The crash remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to contact investigators.

Why do intersection collisions occur on Patchogue-Holbrook Road?

The aftermath of a serious collision leaves families facing overwhelming medical concerns and questions about liability. In crashes involving minors on e-bikes, investigators must carefully examine the actions of all parties, including the turning driver's duty to check blind spots and shoulders before executing a maneuver.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Evidence preservation following serious or fatal e-bike crashes is among the most time-sensitive responsibilities a legal team faces. Physical evidence degrades quickly — skid marks fade, surveillance footage overwrites, and vehicle event-recorder data may become inaccessible without timely legal action."

Legal counsel may act quickly to preserve traffic-camera recordings, dash-camera footage, GPS data, and e-bike electronic records before that evidence disappears, helping surviving families retain what they need to document what occurred, Bond added.

While initial reports may note a rider's direction of travel, traffic safety data indicates that drivers making right turns frequently fail to scan for approaching cyclists or pedestrians in adjacent lanes.

How do insurance companies handle e-bike injury claims?

Following a severe crash, insurance adjusters often contact the involved parties quickly, sometimes before the full extent of a victim's medical needs is understood. Independent investigations often use scene diagrams, vehicle data recorders, and witness statements to build a complete picture of the moments before impact.

According to Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal, "Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth. However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure they are treated respectfully and compensated fairly."

Establishing a clear timeline of events and preserving physical evidence from a crash site are vital steps in ensuring that the rights of the injured child and their family are protected throughout the legal process.

New York personal injury framework

New York follows a pure comparative fault system with no-fault auto insurance. The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Under New York's no-fault system, PIP benefits cover medical expenses and lost wages up to $50,000 regardless of fault. To pursue a liability claim, injuries must meet the 'serious injury' threshold under Insurance Law § 5102(d).
