The 34-year-old man was struck while walking to get gas for a stranded vehicle on Archer Road

Michael Dixon, 34, of Gainesville, was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Archer Road in Gainesville, Florida, early Sunday, according to police.‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Archer Road, according to Dixon’s family. They said Dixon had been walking to a nearby gas station with a fuel container after the vehicle he was riding in with two friends ran out of gas. His friends remained with the car while Dixon set out on foot.

When Dixon failed to return, his friends grew concerned. Family members later confirmed he was struck by a vehicle while walking along the road.

Investigators spent much of the morning mapping the area, keeping the intersection blocked for several hours as they searched for evidence of the fleeing vehicle.

Relatives described the man as a beloved community member, twin brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by those who knew him.

Why did the driver flee the scene on Archer Road?

The sudden loss of a loved one in a hit-and-run leaves families grappling with deep grief and unanswered questions. While investigators work to identify the driver who struck Dixon, legal analysts note that securing evidence quickly is vital in these cases.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians are among the most devastating roadway incidents because a person on foot has no protection at all when struck by a moving vehicle. The injuries are often catastrophic, and the absence of the responsible driver leaves families with immediate questions that have no quick answers."

An attorney can begin building an investigative record right away, work to identify the vehicle involved, and make sure surviving relatives have experienced support from the very start of a difficult and uncertain process, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do hit-and-run investigations unfold in Florida?

Florida has seen a concerning trend in drivers fleeing crash scenes. According to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department, the state recorded 105,092 hit-and-run crashes in 2023, resulting in 276 death. Many of these fatal incidents occur during nighttime or low-visibility conditions.

"Cellphone data has become one of the more revealing sources of evidence in hit-and-run investigations, particularly when distracted driving may have contributed to the crash," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Even when a suspect remains at large, families may have avenues for recovery through their own uninsured drivers coverage, making independent investigations a critical step following a fatal collision.

Florida wrongful death statute

Under Fla. Stat. § 768.16-768.26, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Florida applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of support and services, loss of companionship, mental pain and suffering of survivors, and medical/funeral expenses.
