Michael Michaelis Killed in Colorado Springs Car Accident

A two-vehicle collision at Barnes and Peterson roads left a 41-year-old man dead and two minors injured
Michael Michaelis, 41, was killed in a two-vehicle crasht at the corner of Barnes Road and Peterson Road on Monday, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures at the scene after a northbound vehicle occupied by Michaelis and two minors was struck by an eastbound car and rolled over. The impact ejected the driver from the rolling vehicle around 10 a.m.
Two minors riding in the northbound vehicle suffered minor injuries. The driver of the eastbound car was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have reported 29 traffic death in the city this year, a significant increase from 20 deaths last year.
How did the collision occur at Barnes and Peterson roads?
While investigators work to determine which driver had the right of way at the intersection, establishing liability is a critical step for the grieving family.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Intersection crashes rank among the most difficult to reconstruct because multiple vehicles, turning movements, signal timing, and visibility conditions all converge at a single point. Determining what failed and when requires thorough forensic work."
"An attorney can secure surveillance footage, obtain signal maintenance records, and coordinate with accident reconstruction specialists to protect surviving relatives from insurance carriers pushing settlements before a complete investigation is finished," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the state experienced nearly 100,000 motor vehicle crashes in 2024, with intersection collisions remaining a leading cause of severe injuries and death.
What are the next steps for the Michaelis family?
The sudden loss of a parent leaves families facing both emotional devastation and immediate financial burdens.
"Funeral costs, lost wages, and the long-term financial strain of losing a primary earner can compound a family's suffering. Legal counsel works to calculate the full economic impact so that any recovery pursued reflects what surviving relatives have actually lost," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
Colorado wrongful death statute
Under C.R.S. § 13-21-201, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Colorado applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and net pecuniary loss.
