Nicholas Dillard Injured in Berkeley County Car Accident

The 18-year-old was airlifted after a vehicle went over an embankment on Back Creek Valley Road
Nicholas Dillard, 18, of Hedgesville, was injured in a single-vehicle car accident in the 3400 block of Back Creek Valley Road in Berkeley County, West Virginia, on Tuesday, according to the West Virginia State Police.
The crash occurred around 8 p.m. when a white Buick Verano traveled over an embankment and came to a rest in standing water off the roadway. Prior to troopers arriving on the scene, three occupants were trapped inside the vehicle while one had been ejected.
Dillard, 19-year-old Gracie Estes, and the 17-year-old male driver were airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment. A 20-year-old passenger, Logan Darlington, was transported to Berkeley Medical Center.
Troopers suspect alcohol use to be a contributing factor in the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Why did the Buick leave Back Creek Valley Road?
Investigators are working to determine how the 17-year-old driver lost control before the car traveled over the embankment into standing water. Troopers suspect alcohol played a role. Victims like Dillard face a long recovery after a crash. In car accidents such as this, the physical forces involved can cause severe trauma.
What environmental factors are investigators reviewing?
Beyond driver impairment, reconstructionists will examine the embankment and shoulder conditions along the 3400 block. The physical environment often contributes to how serious a run-off-road collision becomes.
"Healing after a wreck is a long road, and the uncertainty about what caused it doesn't help," said Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal"Road geometry like sight distance and drainage grooves can pull tires, making a standard curve much more dangerous than it looks."
West Virginia follows a modified comparative fault (50% bar) system. The statute of limitations is 2 years.
