Patrick Stubblefield Killed in Tillamook Car Accident

The 43-year-old Salem resident was a passenger in a vehicle that crossed the center line on Highway 18
Patrick John Stubblefield, 43, of Salem, was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 18 near milepost 13.5 in Tillamook County, Oregon, on May 30, according to the Oregon State Police.
The eastbound black Cadillac sedan failed to negotiate a corner, lost control, and continued straight into the westbound lane, where it struck a gray Hyundai Sonata. Stubblefield, who was a passenger in the Cadillac, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Cadillac, the driver of the Hyundai, and two passengers in the Hyundai were all taken to area hospitals with serious injuries.
Traffic was impacted for approximately three hours while troopers investigated the scene.
Oregon recorded 575 motor‑vehicle crash deaths in 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been announced.
The sudden loss of a family member in a head-on collision leaves relatives facing deep grief and complex legal questions. While authorities continue to examine the scene on Highway 18, independent investigations are often necessary to determine liability when a vehicle crosses the center line.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Driver fatigue is among the most underreported risk factors in fatal head-on collisions, with exhausted motorists often drifting across lane markings without any observable warning to other drivers sharing the road."
"Legal counsel can investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and help protect surviving families while addressing insurance issues and preserving critical evidence throughout a complex legal process," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News. ### Why did the Cadillac cross the center line on Highway 18?
Investigators will look at vehicle speed, tire condition, and potential driver distraction as they reconstruct the moments before the Cadillac failed to negotiate the corner. In head-on collisions where a passenger is killed, the passenger bears no fault for the driver's actions.
"An attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash and has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate witnesses to the crash, and review applicable insurance coverage," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
What are the legal options for a passenger's family?
Because Stubblefield was a passenger, his estate has clear grounds to pursue a claim against the at-fault driver's insurance policy. Families navigating these claims often benefit from professional guidance to ensure all avenues of compensation are explored.
Oregon wrongful death statute
Under ORS § 30.020, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Oregon applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
