Andrea Orr, 59, was killed in a pedestrian crash at Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Boulevard and Buchanan Street in Nashville on October 24, according to Metro Nashville Police.

The Evening Crash on Dr. D.B. Todd Jr. Boulevard

A car hit Orr at about 5:50 p.m. as she crossed the intersection in North Nashville. Police said the driver, 19-year-old Danielle McKell, left after she and other people nearby moved Orr onto the sidewalk. Police said officers were not flagged down until about 10:40 p.m., close to five hours later. She was then brought to Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, where she died.

Metro Nashville Police Continue the Case

Police said McKell was named as the driver two days later, on Monday. Police said McKell has received two citations, one for leaving the scene of a crash with injury and one for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, resulting in serious injury. Police said they expect the charges to be upgraded after talks with the Davidson County District Attorney's Office.

Hit-and-run investigations can stay open for months. Some are solved long after the crash, when a new tip or piece of video comes in.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Tennessee usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
