Officers said an Amtrak Gold Runner passenger train struck the pedestrian at around 10:30 a.m. The location sits between two Fresno City College buildings, and the main campus lies on the far side of the railroad. Fresno Police officers responded to the scene. Officials have not released the name of the person who died.

Who Is Leading the Fresno Investigation

The investigation will be managed by the BNSF police department rather than Fresno Police. No charges have been announced. Officials have not said how long the investigation is expected to take or when a report might be made public.

Police usually wait to release the names of the people involved until their families have been told. That is why names often come out a day or more later.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
