The pre-dawn collision occurred in the westbound lanes just south of the Belvidere Road exit. A small SUV and a tractor-trailer collided, leaving debris across multiple lanes of the highway.

The cause remains unknown. Paramedics transported two passengers from the SUV to a local hospital for treatment.

One of the patients was later pronounced dead by medical staff. Authorities have not released how serious the surviving passengers's injuries or their identities.

Troopers closed three lanes of the interstate for approximately six hours to conduct a crash investigation. All lanes reopened by 11 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.

What happens next in the crash investigation?

Investigators are working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led the semi-truck and the SUV to collide on the interstate. In truck accidents such as this, authorities typically examine electronic logging devices, vehicle maintenance records, and driver hours of service to determine liability.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Serious roadway crashes show how quickly normal driving can become a life-changing tragedy when hazards combine with human error or vehicle issues. The impact on families is often overwhelming and long-lasting."

An experienced accident attorney can protect key evidence early, work with experts, and compassionately guide surviving relatives through insurance challenges, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

The crash adds to a rising toll across the country. According to the National Safety Council, 5,218 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes in 2024, a 3% decrease from 2023 but a 30% increase over the past decade.

How do fatal highway crashes impact the Gurnee community?

The sudden loss of a loved one on a major local corridor leaves families facing immediate emotional and financial hurdles. While the investigation continues, surviving victims and grieving families must handle complex insurance frameworks involving commercial carriers and multiple liability policies.

"Aside from the emotional suffering of those left behind, the death of someone close can have devastating financial implications. Loss of income and funeral costs alone can have tragic consequences when a family member is lost," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Illinois wrongful death statute

Under 740 ILCS 180, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Illinois applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of society, and grief.
