Prasanna Atlur Killed in Cayuta Car Accident

Prasanna Atlur car accident on State Route 224, Cayuta, New York

Passenger killed after vehicle allegedly runs red light at State Routes 224 and 13

Prasanna Atlur, 31, of New Jersey, was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the corner of State Routes 224 and 13 in Cayuta, New York, on July 5, according to the State Police.‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌

The crash happened before dawn. A Tesla traveling through the intersection allegedly ran a red light and was struck by an eastbound Dodge Charger that had a green light, investigators reported. Atlur, who was riding in the back seat of the Tesla, was taken to Robert Packer Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the Tesla and another passenger suffered serious injuries, while a third passenger was uninjured.

The driver of the Charger, identified as an off-duty state parole officer, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Because a state officer was involved, the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation is reviewing the collision.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is assisting with the ongoing inquiry.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), intersection-related incidents historically account for roughly 20% to 25% of all fatal traffic crashes nationwide.

The involvement of a state parole officer triggers an automatic review under New York law, leaving grieving families waiting for official findings.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Intersection crashes involving red light running tend to happen without warning, giving drivers almost no chance to brace for impact. Side collisions send tremendous force into passenger compartments, causing catastrophic injuries or death even at moderate speeds."

"An attorney coordinates crash reconstruction, reviews signal timing, and examines vehicle damage to understand how a crash unfolded, while helping surviving relatives navigate insurance companies and financial strain," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What factors lead to fatal intersection collisions on State Route 224?

Investigators will examine signal timing, vehicle data recorders, and sightlines at the rural intersection to determine exactly how the collision occurred. In car accidents such as this, understanding the exact speed and point of impact is critical for establishing liability.

How can families handle the aftermath of a fatal crash?

The sudden loss of a loved one in a severe collision creates immediate emotional and financial burdens for the surviving family members. While the state conducts its official review, independent investigations often help preserve important evidence.

New York wrongful death statute

Under N.Y. EPTL § 5-4.1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. New York applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of parental guidance, funeral expenses, and the decedent's conscious pain and suffering.

"Pursuing a wrongful death claim requires meeting strict legal deadlines and gathering evidence quickly after a fatal crash. Legal counsel works to protect the rights of surviving relatives while navigating court procedures and insurance requirements with careful attention to detail," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
