Investigators with the Regional Major Accident Investigation Team are examining the wreckage of a 2013 Dodge Charger. The vehicle was driving at an excessive speed when the driver lost control, sending the car off the road and rolling it onto its side.

Seven other teenagers in the vehicle were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately released.

The crash remains under investigation.

Authorities have not announced any charges against the driver.

Why did the Dodge Charger leave Rancho Road?

While the exact sequence of events is under review, investigators are focusing on excessive speed as the primary cause of the rollover.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Speed amplifies everything in a rollover event, and the physics are unforgiving once a vehicle starts rotating at highway velocities. Roof intrusion, partial ejection, and catastrophic trauma can all develop within the same few critical seconds."

"A legal team can pursue vehicle data, retain reconstruction experts, and challenge any insurance conclusions that don't hold up," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic death nationwide in 2022.

How does a criminal investigation against the driver affect a wrongful death claim?

"Losing a family member in a rollover crash carries immediate financial consequences, with funeral expenses and lost household income arriving well before any insurance resolution appears. When the driver also faces criminal charges, the civil process slows in ways that deepen hardship. Legal counsel can manage the wrongful death claim and fight for timely outcomes," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Families like the Castros are left grieving sudden losses while navigating the aftermath of a preventable crash. A thorough investigation will determine the full scope of liability for the driver who lost control.

California wrongful death statute

"Wrongful death claims in car accidents provide a vital mechanism for grieving families to secure financial stability and hold negligent drivers accountable outside the criminal justice system," Formica added. Eligible survivors can seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship. California enforces a strict two-year statute of limitations for wrongful death claims, making the prompt preservation of vehicle data and crash scene evidence essential.
