The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the crash.

California recorded 3,786 traffic deaths in 2024, according to state crash data, underscoring the persistent toll on local roads where speeding, impairment, and distraction remain leading causes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 39,254 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024, with speeding, impairment, and distraction leading the causes, while adverse weather also contributed.

How do weather conditions impact crashes on Alameda Street?

While the exact cause of this collision remains under investigation, environmental factors such as weather often play a significant role in urban crashes. Wet or slick roads can reduce tire traction, making it difficult for drivers to maintain control or stop in time to avoid parked vehicles.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "When investigators have not yet determined the full cause of a fatal crash, surviving families deserve legal support focused on filling those evidentiary gaps. Weather, road conditions, and vehicle performance each contribute to a complete picture."

"An attorney can coordinate that review, preserve time-sensitive environmental data, and ensure affected families aren't left with incomplete findings," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What are the historical crash patterns in downtown Los Angeles?

Downtown corridors see high volumes of traffic, increasing the statistical probability of collisions. Investigators will examine the vehicle's speed, the driver's actions, and any potential weather-related visibility issues that may have contributed to the impact.

"The financial and emotional toll of losing someone in a fatal two-vehicle collision can be staggering for surviving relatives. Insurance claims, disputed liability, and the complexity of crash investigations compound an already devastating experience," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"An attorney serving affected families works to preserve the evidence that matters most and shield surviving relatives from premature settlement pressure."

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
