Ronald Strader Killed in Columbus Motorcycle Accident

The collision occurred when a northbound Jeep Compass attempted a left turn onto Ruoff Farm Drive
Ronald Strader, 54, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Demorest Road near Ruoff Farm Drive in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, according to the Columbus Police Department.
The northbound Jeep Compass attempted a left turn directly into the path of the southbound 2019 Harley-Davidson. The impact ejected Strader from the bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Columbus firefighters. The driver and passenger in the Jeep were not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Accident Investigation Unit, and no charges have been announced.
The collision adds to a rising toll across the state, as the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) reported 220 fatalities in 216 motorcycle-involved fatal traffic crashes in 2024.
Why did the Jeep turn into oncoming traffic on Demorest Road?
Left-turn collisions represent a significant hazard for riders navigating urban corridors. For the family of Strader, the sudden loss highlights the devastating consequences of right-of-way violations.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Left turn crashes rank among the deadliest situations a motorcycle rider can face, mainly because a lighter frame makes split second timing so unforgiving. Signal sequencing and sight lines at busy intersections often matter more than people realize, especially when a turning vehicle blocks a view of oncoming traffic."
"An attorney frequently coordinates reconstruction experts who can recreate what unfolded," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
How common are fatal motorcycle crashes in Ohio?
The state has seen a concerning trend in rider death. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, fatal motorcycle crashes rose 10% in 2023 to their highest level over the prior five years.
Ohio wrongful death statute
Under Ohio Rev. Code § 2125.01, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Ohio applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of services and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.
"Analyzing onboard data modules on passenger vehicles involved in motorcycle crashes helps verify whether drivers used turn signals or braked before entering a rider’s path," said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.
Formica, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News, noted, "A legal team works fast to issue preservation letters to vehicle owners, ensuring digital telemetry is saved before it can be overwritten."
