Ross Frederickson Killed in Gordon ATV Accident

Ross Frederickson fatal ATV crash on Cabin Lane, Gordon, Wisconsin

The 71-year-old rider was struck head-on by a passing UTV on Cabin Lane, authorities report

Ross Frederickson, 71, of Eagan, Minnesota, was killed Saturday afternoon when his ATV was struck head-on by a passing UTV on Cabin Lane in Gordon, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍

First responders arrived near County Highway Y around 2:36 p.m. to find the rider thrown from his four-wheeler. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the man died before he could be transported.

Investigators determined the westbound ATV was leading a group of riders when it encountered an eastbound group. The driver of an eastbound side-by-side UTV attempted to pass another vehicle in his group and collided directly with Frederickson's ATV.

A 42-year-old female passenger in the UTV was taken to a local hospital with a head injury, while the 38-year-old UTV driver was unhurt.

The Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin DNR are continuing to investigate the fatal collision. No charges were immediately announced.

How do ATV and UTV crash risks compare?

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Fatal head-on collisions often involve catastrophic impact forces that make determining speed, timing, and responsibility difficult. Debris patterns, vehicle damage, and witness accounts frequently conflict."

"An attorney works with reconstruction specialists, obtains traffic camera footage, accesses event data from vehicles, analyzes cellphone records, and helps protect surviving families from financial hardship during overlapping insurance disputes," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What is the investigation progress in Douglas County?

According to state data, excessive speed and unsafe operation, including improper passing, are frequent causes of ATV/UTV fatalities. By early June 2026, the state had recorded 16 deaths, prompting increased patrols and safety campaigns.

What is the status of the victims?

Wisconsin wrongful death statute

Under Wis. Stat. § 895.04, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Wisconsin applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of society and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.

"Surviving families face financial hardship following fatal crashes. An attorney helps relatives recover compensation through wrongful death claims addressing funeral costs, lost wages, medical bills, and ongoing needs, securing adequate damages for the financial losses resulting from the fatal accident," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
