Ruth Cowser Killed in Clinton Car Accident
The crash occurred at the intersection of State Route 10 East and Plow Road
Ruth A. Cowser, 68, of DeLand, was killed in a two-vehicle crash at the corner of State Route 10 East and Plow Road in Clinton on Aug. 20, according to the Illinois State Police.
An eastbound Ford Fiesta collided with a westbound Dodge Nitro. The impact caused heavy damage to both vehicles and required emergency medical transport for multiple passengers. Cowser, who was driving the Fiesta, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma. A passenger in her vehicle was airlifted to a hospital in Champaign.
The driver of the Dodge Nitro was taken by ambulance to a Champaign hospital. Their condition was not immediately released.
The crash remains under investigation by the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office, the coroner's office, and state troopers. No citations have been announced.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the state recorded 1,178 traffic fatalities in 2024.
