The southbound Honda Civic struck Diaz in the road at approximately 5 a.m. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital with major injuries, where he later died.

How common are pedestrian death in Fresno County?
Pedestrian safety remains a critical issue across the state, with urban and suburban corridors frequently seeing severe collisions. California’s pedestrian fatality rate was 2.84 deaths per 100,000 residents in 2023, about 30 percent higher than the national average of 2.18, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.
In pedestrian accidents such as this, traffic safety analysts note that infrastructure and visibility often play a critical role.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Weather and poor visibility create dangerous combinations for pedestrians when drivers fail to adjust speed for deteriorating conditions. Fatal pedestrian crashes involve multiple factors that only become clear through careful reconstruction and physical evidence review."
"A legal team can piece together skid-mark data, weather records, and witness statements, giving surviving relatives a clear path forward," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
What legal options exist for grieving families?
While the Reedley Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances of the early morning collision, independent investigations are often necessary to preserve evidence. Families navigating the sudden loss of a loved one face a complex path to justice, especially when dealing with insurance adjusters who often contact victims' families within days of an incident.
Under California law, individuals injured or killed due to another party's negligence may be entitled to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
"Insurance carriers move fast after a fatal pedestrian crash, and surviving families are often contacted before any real chance to grieve," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
"An attorney stepping in early helps families avoid statements or documents that could undermine fair accountability. Managing the insurance process, preserving evidence, and protecting the rights of those left behind is what experienced legal counsel is built to handle."
