Christina King Killed in Irwindale Truck Accident

The semi-truck crashed through the center divider into opposing traffic, injuring 32 others
Christina King, 58, was killed when a semi-truck crossed a freeway median and struck multiple vehicles on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Irwindale on Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the westbound lanes near the Irwindale Avenue on-ramp just before 9 a.m., where they found a chaotic scene involving a tractor-trailer and at least two passenger vehicles. Emergency crews transported two critically injured people and eight others with minor injuries, including six children, to a local hospital. Twenty-two additional people involved in the wreck declined medical transport.
The eastbound semi-truck smashed through the center divider wall, entering opposing traffic. King was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash shut down the westbound freeway between Irwindale Avenue and the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway for hours, prompting a Sigalert. Two left lanes and the carpool lane on the eastbound side were also blocked.
The crash remains under investigation.
The collision adds to the 391 deaths from large‑truck crashes recorded in California in 2024, according to the National Safety Council.
How common are fatal median-crossover crashes on California freeways?
Median-crossover collisions involving vehicles represent a severe subset of the state's traffic death. The Foothill Freeway corridor carries heavy freight traffic daily, increasing the risk of catastrophic multi-vehicle impacts when a tractor-trailer breaches a concrete divider.
In truck accidents such as this, investigators will scrutinize the driver's hours of service, the vehicle's mechanical maintenance, and the structural integrity of the center wall.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Mechanical failure contributes to more fatal truck crashes than most people realize, with brake deficiencies and tire failures among the most common documented causes. Maintenance records can reveal whether warning signs were ignored before a fatal collision occurred."
"An attorney can obtain those records quickly, engage forensic engineers, and ensure surviving relatives have full access to evidence that matters most," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
What role does vehicle weight play in barrier breaches?
A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds, generating immense kinetic energy that standard highway dividers are sometimes unable to contain. When a truck enters opposing traffic lanes, the resulting head-on or side-impact collisions frequently result in mass casualty events, as seen with the 32 people injured in the Irwindale wreck.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
"Serving as an advocate, an attorney often steps in when insurers push grieving families toward fast, low settlements. Protecting surviving relatives from that pressure means taking time to assess actual losses fully before any offer gets serious consideration or acceptance," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
