Students Injured in Perkins Township School Bus Accident

The four-vehicle collision occurred on Perkins Avenue near Bayview Lane
Two students were injured in a four-vehicle commercial crash involving a school bus on Perkins Avenue near Bayview Lane in Perkins Township, Ohio, on Wednesday, April 15, according to the State Highway Patrol.
An eastbound Ram 1500 pickup truck failed to maintain a clear distance and rear-ended the transit vehicle as it slowed for traffic. The impact pushed the heavy vehicle into a Buick Encore, which then struck a second Buick Encore.
Paramedics transported the two youths to Firelands Hospital in Sandusky for treatment of minor injuries. The 40-year-old driver of the pickup truck was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
There were 52 passengers on board the bus at the time of the collision. The drivers of the two Buick Encores, a 68-year-old woman and an 83-year-old woman, were not reported injured.
Troopers are continuing to investigate the sequence of events. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Perkins Police Department and Perkins Fire and EMS. Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted while crews worked to clear the four vehicles from the road.
When a child is injured on their way home from school, parents and the broader community are often left searching for answers about driver accountability and safety protocols. In rear-end collisions involving commercial or transit vehicles, the weight difference between the vehicles often exacerbates the impact felt by passengers inside the cabin.
National LNational Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Nobody considers the design of a bus seat until they're thrown forward during a sudden stop. Most transit buses don't have seatbelts, relying instead on high-backed, padded seats to keep passengers safe during an impact."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses remain one of the safest forms of transportation, though rear-end collisions by inattentive drivers continue to pose significant risks to passengers.
Why did the pickup truck strike the bus on Perkins Avenue?
Establishing negligence in a rear-end collision requires a thorough review of the at-fault driver's actions, including speed, distraction, and following distance prior to the impact. Investigators will examine skid marks, vehicle damage, and potential electronic data to determine why the pickup failed to stop in time.
Families of injured students often face unexpected medical bills and complex insurance claims involving multiple drivers and commercial entities. National LNational Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "I've seen families blindsided by the lack of seatbelts on public transit buses. These vehicles rely on high-backed, padded seats for protection, but that doesn't help much when a passenger is thrown into the aisle."
What are the legal options for parents of the injured students?
Following a multi-vehicle crash, insurance adjusters frequently attempt to contact involved parties before the full extent of medical costs and long-term impacts are known. A full investigation helps ensure that all cause are identified and that the rights of the injured students and their families are protected throughout the recovery process.
