The Overnight Crash on Westbound I-80

Solano Area officers were sent to westbound Interstate 80 near Interstate 780 a little after 2:30 a.m. Thursday. The California Highway Patrol said a Tesla struck the man as he crossed the freeway from the right shoulder toward the center divide. The agency said the Tesla was traveling about 70 mph, and its dash camera showed the car braking and steering left. Emergency crews found that the man had died, and the CHP has not released his name. The CHP said the Tesla's driver, a San Francisco man, 26, cooperated with officers and handed over the dash camera footage.

Where the CHP Investigation Stands

The CHP said the man was struck again by at least one other vehicle while he lay in the lanes, and that no other vehicle stopped. The CHP has not identified that driver. CHP Officer Scott Heitman said no citation was issued to the Tesla driver. The CHP's Solano Area office is asking anyone who saw the crash or has information about the other vehicles to call 707-639-5600. Every westbound lane was open again by 4:43 a.m.

Hit-and-run investigations can stay open for months. Some are solved long after the crash, when a new tip or piece of video comes in.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
