The sudden loss of life in overnight freeway collisions leaves families searching for answers.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Understanding what caused a fatal crash takes more than a quick look at the scene. The real answer is often buried in phone records, vehicle data, maintenance history, or the conditions present on the road that day."

Families dealing with loss deserve to know the full truth, not just the surface-level version, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do investigators reconstruct two-vehicle collisions?

"An attorney can help surviving families understand their options, preserve important evidence, and make sure no one has to face that process without experienced support," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Determining exactly how the black sedan struck the wall and where the vehicles collided requires detailed forensic work. Investigators look at skid marks, vehicle damage, and debris fields to establish fault. California recorded 3,786 traffic deaths in 2024, according to state crash data, with nighttime and early‑morning crashes accounting for much of the toll.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
