Walter Williams Killed in Milwaukee Hit-and-Run Accident
A 55-year-old suspect was arrested hours later after falsely reporting his truck stolen
Walter Williams, 64, of Milwaukee, was killed in a hit-and-run crash near 17th and Vliet streets on July 31, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
A speeding pickup truck struck Williams, who was riding a bicycle, just after 5:30 p.m. along the urban corridor and fled the scene. A medical student who called 911 performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators used surveillance video and the city's Flock camera system to track the fleeing vehicle to the Washington Park area. Officers arrested a 55-year-old man hours later after he called police to falsely report his truck had been stolen. The suspect is in custody.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the state recorded 32 hit-and-run death in 2024.
The crash remains under investigation. No formal charges have been announced.
